Fine coal slime flotation is a difficult operating point for many coal washing plants. Ultra-fine coal particles are prone to mud coating, which can reduce clean coal yield, destabilize ash control and increase reagent consumption.
Frother selection directly affects bubble characteristics and the economics of the flotation section. For fine slime, uniform and moderately fragile bubbles are usually preferred. Excessively stable foam can carry gangue minerals, while foam that breaks too quickly can reduce particle capture efficiency.
Pulp complexity is another important factor. Clay, fine mud and dissolved ions can interfere with frother performance, so the selected reagent should be matched together with coal property, current collector, pH and dosage.
